In 2025, I started sharing at the Union Gospel Mission in Pasco WA. My first sermon was on Philippians 1 verses 1-3. I did not write that sermon fully, so here are a few points that I shared in that first message to start a series through Philippians.
Passage: Philippians 1:1-3
Paul wrote this letter to those who were saints. Saints were not only the overseers and deacons, but were the whole church. Everyone who is saved by the work of Jesus.
We think of a saint as someone who is very different, and is in fact the definition, but when the New Testament describes a saint, it describes a saint as one who is set apart and made holy by Jesus.
The letter of Philippians was written to those who have put their confidence in Christ, and in Christ we are promised Grace and Peace.

As we grow in our love for God, this produces knowledge and discernment, which in turn produces fruit of righteousness in our life.

Paul was writing Philippians from Prison, and could say that what he was experiencing was producing something good.

Our life should be one of humility. We should look to ways that God is working in our brothers and sisters, and mention it to them. Our goal should be to lift others up.
